ONE MORE ROUND--Do not give up on the work or yourself. If I say just one more round, I have things to complete and I am not finished with them yet. Each day at school is different and if I can leave one day and say the next day is another round and start fresh, that is helpful. What is done is done, but what is yet to come is unknown so don't throw things away just because today did not go as expected. Life throws the curves and we may take a swing and miss and that may happen many times before we get a hit. Finding new ways to connect, teach, inspire is challenging. But I must stay persistent as I love these kids and want them to be their best.

Going one more round to me simply not giving up. It means no matter how challenging and defeating something may be, you keep going until you consider it your success. I think when tasks or days are draining it is challenging to not just give the minimum to get through it and make tomorrow a better day. It is important to go the extra mile to get "one more round." I think it is important to teach students to not just do the minimum to get by somedays, even if that feels like the easy thing to do. We need to encourage them (and model for them) that going one more round should be happening every single day.
I believe that what is meant by “going one more round” simply means not giving up. Of course, things are going to be challenging, but it’s how we face adversity and don’t quit that the author is telling us really matters. Our willingness to keep going, to keep learning and improving, knowing we do not have to be and won’t be perfect is important. In my work, as a School Counselor, it means to me that I am leaving the students and families in a place with empathy, support and resources that help them and hopefully leave them in a place that will be better for them than when they came to me. It also means supporting my students, families and co-workers in ways that help them feel seen and valuable. Lastly, it means continuing to work on myself personally and professionally so that I am best prepared to show up and give back. As a School Counselor and adult, I can model this by showing what it looks like to persevere and demonstrating that it is okay to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them and work towards improvement.
I like how you talk about modeling this. Our students are constantly watching us and it is important to model what we preach. We never know when they are watching us.
'Go one more round" to me means pushing past the limits set to achieve more. It's about grit, perseverance, and overcoming the mental barrier that says you can't do more and building confidence in your ability to handle the hardships. As a substitute teacher, I feel I foster a positive, safe environment by building rapport with students. Nothing makes me happier when students walk in and see me and say ' YES! I love when you sub...."

Those days that set you back will inspire you to get back up with a plan so your dreams will come true. I would also like to help my students and fellow educators to also keep going one more round which would improve my school and community.

To me this means you don't give up when things get tough. There are going to be tough days and we need to show up even more on those day for kids and fellow educators. We use the word persevere a lot in my room, when plan A doesn't work we try plan B. In the classroom or life in general we will always face challenges and we need to be resilient and keep trying despite feeling like quitting.
"One more round" means to me another chance or the round previously was not fully complete as in a saying I like to use "I don't now that yet". What can I do to help leave my school and those around me?" I can continue to build relationships with students and staff. Each day, I make a point of greeting and talking to students, I want all students to feel heard, and valued. I make sure I am visible and present for students and staff. I check in with teachers, whether its stopping by there classroom for a quick "Hi" which gives me an opportunity to see how things are going or if there are any needs that I can help with anything immediately. If there are questions that staff has that I don't have the answer, I make sure I go find the answers and follow-up. Showing up and consistency makes a huge difference where I feel I can do everyday for the students and staff.

One more round simply means to never give up. Make sure you know that there have been countless others who may have had the excuse to give up, but they just seem to bounce back and have no regrets. You might have another path to go in the other round, but there's always another round.
What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?
I like the sign he puts in the classroom "Pride in Performance" because it's true that kids these days get a reward whether they put forth effort or not; thus it's not really rewardable. Pride in performance means simply to put for your best effort and take some pride in that.
To me, "Going one more round", means not quitting, even when things are hard. You need to be able to face challenges. If you fail at something, then you need to be able to come up with a different plan to meet the challenge. I work on building strong relationships with all of my students, so that they know I am their biggest cheerleader in all that they do. I want them to always know how proud they make me, and that I won't give up on them
One more round means to always finish strong. No matter how hard or tired you may feel, finish strong and go one more round. That is something that my parents have instilled in me growing up with whatever I was passionate about either in sports, school, projects, etc. In order to leave the school better than I found it, some things that should be done is figure out what's not working, and try again. Always try again until it feels like you've succeeded, others are on board, and improvements and progress is being shown. Another thing that could be done is to communicate and ask questions. In order to better ourselves as educators and better our school community we have to be communicating and asking questions to figure out what the problem is, what needs to be done, and what steps we can do to get there.
To me, “one more round” means not giving up when something is difficult and choosing to persevere even when you feel tired or discouraged. It means continuing to try, grow, and support others even when challenges arise. I can leave my school and those around me better by encouraging others, offering support, and consistently showing up for my colleagues and students. Small actions like helping a coworker, sharing ideas, or simply being positive and supportive can make a meaningful difference in the school community.
"One more round" to me means to never give up! At some point in our lives we will all face adversity. How we handle and respond to that adversity is what will make us or break us. I think as educators it is important for us be there for our students when they do face adversity. Supporting them and cheering them on is so important. They need to know that they have someone in their corner wanting them to be successful!
To me…. Going one more round means not giving up when things get tough. It means doing some self talk to help yourself power through and build confidence to work through obstacles that make you feel like you want to throw in the towel. Each time you power through a tough situation that confidence will build and carry you through the next time you need to convince yourself to keep going and not give up.
Going one more round means to keep persevering. Let's be honest, sometimes teaching leads to burn out and exhaustion. I really like the saying "Going one more round" it's easy to memorize and I plan on using it on those really hard days. I will also use it on the really good days too, because our students deserve our best and we need to always go that extra mile or one more round for them.
It is interesting that he doesn't speak to the burn out that going one more round often leads to. After many years, teachers do need to find the motivation that it takes to continually step up for those students who need it. That is why it takes a team that can work together and all have the mindset that every student is worth it. They can step up at different times in the year because can get to be a heavy load alone.
Going on more round as a SPED behavior teacher means finding the best techniques for each individual student to be able to recognize, identify, and modify their behavior. For some students that is me just holding up a stop sign for them to see as a visual that they need to stop and pause. Other students need time to sit and color or draw. I have another student who needs to take a walk. One more round means taking the time to find what works for each one of my kids!

In both settings, it’s about developing mental toughness and a mindset that carries beyond school.

But, I also try to hold them to high standards, because believing in them means expecting more from them. I can also improve by being more intentional by checking in with students who are struggling, and celebrating small wins.

The idea of "One more round" would mean to teach my students that things won't always go our way, but we give it another shot regardless of the outcome. I can live this out, because not every lesson will go my way, or class period even, but I can still show up the next period or the next day to try again or work to do better.
I think this is a great thing for me to work on teaching the students in my school as many of them come from households that don't always have that mindset, so being a positive example of perseverance in their lives and working to instill "one more round" can help to impact their lives.

To me, “one more round” means not giving up when something is difficult, whether that is with schoolwork, relationships, or personal goals. It’s about showing up again and again, and doing a little better each time.
To leave my school and the people around me better than I found them, I could make small but consistent and meaningful choices, such as helping students or coworkers who are struggling, being respectful and encouraging, including others, and taking responsibility for my actions. I want to be able to make a difference, even in small ways, each and every day.
One More Round to me means, regardless of the outcome learning from it and choosing to get better each time. Sometimes things aren't going to go in our favor, but choosing to use that as a learning opportunity and get better because of it is what it means to me. I think modeling that behavior for our students and those arounds us is going to help show them, that we don't have to be perfect in all that we do; but showing up and putting our best effort forth is what we can do.

If I want to be an educator who leaves a legacy, I need to step up and take pride in who I am and what I teach. I need to embrace those changes, make those sacrifices, and model the attitude I expect from my students. If I want to create change, I must be that example for both my students and my peers.
Even in my 2nd grade classroom, I make sure a positive attitude is what greets students in the morning and what they leave with at the end of the day. I appreciate the emphasis on humility and putting your team first—values that apply at any age. In my classroom, we celebrate both success and failure. If a student is willing to share a thought, answer, or idea, we celebrate that effort. It takes practice, but students are more willing to go ‘one more round’ when they are not afraid to try.
At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel pride in what they have done—students and teachers alike.

I need to show up every day -- for myself, for my family, for my coworkers, and for my students. As a teacher, my students need to see that I will never give up on them. We may have differences and we may not see eye to eye on everything, but they need to see that I will keep showing up for them. My students need to see and feel that I am here for them. That means I need to show up, give them a genuine smile, and show them that I truly care about them.
I want to show my students and my colleagues that I am there for them. This could mean giving up some of my time to help out. It could mean just giving them an ear so feel heard. It doesn't always have to a big thing to make a difference.
It is so important for the students to see us as the teachers persevere and work through the hard things, not only with our own things, but even more so with them. When they know that we are not giving up and are pushing through the tough with them, they rise to the occasion as well.
One more round to me means, when I'm having a bad day because of a troubling student or parent issue, I need to take a moment and reflect on the situation. Don't give up or give in to the problem. Taking a moment to talk with a colleague/friend are essential. I need to think about and assess the situation/problem and make a plan as to how I am going to deal with it. This is how I am going "go one more round." Because actions speak louder than words, I will model to students good behavior decisions on how to deal with conflict and show them that I am here for them.
I agree with your thought of taking a moment and reflecting on the situation. So much of the time we act first without stopping and thinking. I am guilty of this too. I like the idea of stop and the first thing is to think: “What can I do to go one more round?” I also like your comment of not giving into the problem. In the future I really want to work on, not complaining and falling into a negative trap, but instead what can I do to make this situation better for those around me? Demonstrating this to students will be very beneficial, especially if there are situations they can relate to. No, we cannot control everything that happens to us, but what is the light shining through, and how can we push ourselves to go one more round?
"The Great Ones Go One More Round". What a great motto to live by! “One more round” means to not give up, or if you fail, get back up and try again. One thing I tell my own children often is "attack the day" if something is not going your way, do not avoid it, go through it. One way to make those around you better than you found it/them that I do is coaching. I love sports so I use that as a pathway to connect with not only my kids but kids that I coach or have coached. Sports are awesome to learn adversity, in most instances, you will experience failure and I help lead in expectations or listen to all the things that the kids are feeling. Especially when you are the coach and experiencing a loss with the kids, your connection is that much stronger. I don't know if I am making that big of a difference, but I am trying.
I love the idea of "Attack the day". I also believe sports can be an incredible way to deal with adversity. Learning how to respond when you lose is one of the best experiences in terms of growth that can happen for kids. Keep up the great work Randi!
One more round means not stopping when I feel like I am finished or when something gets difficult. It means I keep going a little further than I think I can.
To leave my school and the people around me better than I found them I can try harder in my schoolwork even when it is challenging. I can help other students understand things instead of letting them struggle alone. I can be respectful in how I talk and act toward teachers and classmates. I can also include people who are left out and stand up for what is right instead of staying silent. I can take responsibility for my choices and try to make good decisions even when no one is watching.
To me, "one more round" means you have to keep trying. No one is perfect and our kids need to understand that they will stumble, fail, and make mistakes, but it is not the end of their life - we have to keep moving forward and do better the next time. Learn from those stumbles, life is a journey of progress. Students need a little failure in their life at school to help them learn that hard work, dedication and continuing to try your best "one more round" is a life lesson they will carry into adulthood. Learning this lesson at school, when they are surrounded by support, I hope gives them the confidence they need once they are on their own.

One more round is all about perseverance. Things will happen in our personal lives and in our professional lives and we can either "throw in the towel", as Hamish states, or we can pick ourselves up off the canvas and continue a life of servant leadership and integrity. "Leaving it better than you found it" is something I strive for daily by showing kindness and leading by example. By showing up daily with kindness and servant leadership in mind, relationships with students, staff and parents are continually being built. Hopefully, this sparks confidence and a sense of trust throughout the building.
The phrase "one more round" sounds a lot better than our typical, "here we go again" phrase. There are a lot of teachers that don't go one more round, they quit teaching. To me saying let's go one more round means that you not only a teacher, but a person has the fight left in you. Even though you know, there are gonna be tough days ahead. Days that you question whether you're good enough for this job or you can keep doing it. We all have those days as teachers, but we always show up the next day and give it one more round it also looks like trying something over again for example if you teach a lesson and it doesn't work, go back to the drawing board and try it again. Its never giving in, or up.

I also tend to look at everyday as a fresh start and how can I be the best version of myself. How I respond to tough situations and going one more round can have incredible impacts on students lives. I think one of the best things we can do for our students is to show up everyday no matter the circumstance and offer them the best chance to succeed and be the best version of themselves.

As a colleague and teacher I try everyday to have a positive attitude in my classroom, and building. I like to have a growth mindset that we “get” to come to school and to work, not that we “have to”. Having this mindset has changed my perspectives and I hope influences others around me. It is is privilege to be in a place where you are accepted and loved for who you are. We also as educators get to inspire so many others around us, and be apart of their life’s! One More Round means never ever giving up on students and their learning. It is being able to tell every student that no matter how long it takes, or what we have to do, I believe that they can learn and that they can achieve more than they believe. They need to trust, even after testing you, that I won't let them fail. This does not mean to lower standards and expectations so that all students see success, but it is being willing to let students fail so that they can experience perseverance and success in the climbing their way back up. I try to always take the opportunity to go one more round with the hardest to reach students. It takes many more rounds often, but the pay off is big for the student. I can send them to the next grade with more confidence, grit, and positive experiences behind them. The fear of failure can be replaced with the feeling of accomplishment.

I have seen this in my own children, where if they are keep trying and finally accomplish something on their own, they begin beaming and in turn end up trying something more difficult. I have asked students whose lives are tough but still do great what is that makes them keep going. Their responses were, "I don't want to end up like parents and live their life, I want better." Another student said that, "I know I deserve better but the only way that is going to happen is if I make it happen." These students are resilient. The are emotionally intelligent students. I've asked myself over and over again, "What makes them think like that?" I see students with no hope in their eyes, no goals are set in their minds and I see it as my duty to give them hope and motivation. I want to see every child have an opportunity to learn and to believe in themselves. That is why I believe that education has to be meaningful and purposeful, students need to know they "why" when they ask "Why do I have to go to school or why do I need good grades? They need to feel and experience it and that doesn't always happen in a classroom. Education has to be meaningful.
One more round means giving it my all every day, and not giving up on students. Something I say to students often is, "If I'm not giving up on you, then you can't either." Each day I go into school with the mindset that I will do my best to teach my students well. Some days I leave school feeling like a rockstar teacher, but other days I leave feeling frustrated that things did not go quite as I hoped. Either way, I go home knowing that I am not throwing in the towel, and that every day is a new day. I give myself that grace, but I also extend it to my students, treating them with respect and letting each day be new for them as well.
Something that I can do for my students to leave them better than I found them is to treat them as valuable and call them by name. Especially since I became a mom, I have realized more and more that my students are someone else's child, and I want to care for my students the same way that I hope my own kids are being cared for in their own classrooms. This shift in role and attitude does leave my students better than I found them, as the result is students that know they are cared for and that are also held accountable to standards.
I agree with you about treating my students as I hope my own children were treated by their teachers. When you are a teacher and a mom, you view things differently. I find myself thinking about how I would feel if my own child was struggling and how I would want the teacher to respond. Putting value onto each child helps me to respond with grace and kindness, along with a gentle push to keep them from giving up. All students deserve to be treated with respect.
One More Round means giving my best each day. I am a firm believer that having a positive attitude can, and will, change your day. When we lead a class with positivity our students will begin to approach their day in the same way. I never hesitate to let my students know that it's not always easy and things will be hard. We don't always want to do what is expected of us. However, entering those tasks with a "one more round" mentality will help us succeed. I also think it is so important for students to experience setbacks and know that that is all part of life. Picking ourselves up and trying again is such a valuable lesson. We celebrate attempts in our room every day!!
One More Round for me is every day starts fresh and new. A clean slate or fresh start to be ready, give it my all, and try again. I can become overwhelmed by the process, behaviors, and life in general. I feel this way most often in the later parts of the day. I consistently remind myself to work hard, strive to meet the days goals, and then re-start for the next day If I need a new start each day then my co-workers and students deserve the same. I try to model "one more round" and a fresh start to my students reflecting that a bad choice can be turned around with the fresh start of a new day. Holding a grudge or holding over a behavior does not allow us to "get back up", grow (learn from our mistakes), or work to our full potential which then traps us and our students in a negative place.
I love your taking on "one more round". This is something I strive so hard to do but somedays it's tough! As a mom with 3 young kids, some mornings are more chaotic than others and sometimes the stress from the morning trickles into my classroom. This is a great way to look at going "one more round" and it's something I can definitely apply to my professional and personal life!
To me, going “one more round” means going out of my comfort zone. Many times as educators, we get into a routine that works and we don’t change it up or try something new. This is something I’m working to improve on. Recreating lessons and making adjustments isn’t always easy and it creates more work for myself, but I do it for my students so they can have better learning opportunities and outcomes.
In my school, I have worked to build strong relationships with my students that last throughout the years. I love when I get the opportunity to visit with my students that I taught 9 years ago. Whether it’s complimenting them on their basketball game from the other night or sharing a laugh with them about something they did or said back in pre-k, I treasure the relationship I have with them. My hope is that by having trusted adults and teachers who truly care about them in our school, they will see the value that we also see in them.
I like your definition of "one more round". It is uncomfortable to step out of our comfort zones. I admire your willingness to take risks (adapt lessons/try new approaches). It shows that you are still an invested teacher - attempting to provide students great learning experiences. It is pretty cool to connect with past students - hearing about their successes. To me, "one more round" means doing my best work all the time even when it is difficult. It means being there for kids even on the hard days when work is overwhelming and stressful. It means not giving up when things do not go as planned, instead pushing forward. It means doing whatever it takes for students and others around me.
I do many things to leave my school and those around me better than I found it/them. One ways is by building relationships with students and those that I work with. Due to these relationships, I am better able to support and encourage others when they are facing challenges or need guidance - this is necessary in a school counselor role. Specifically with students I am able to guide and support them academically and as they make decisions/plans post high school. With staff, I am able to support their work with students. Ultimately, I hope that my relationships make an impact on all around me. By making students and others feel supported, I am leaving my school and those around me better than I found them/it.

It's about grit, perseverance, and overcoming the mental barrier that says you can't do more and building confidence in your ability to handle the hardships. As a substitute teacher, I feel I foster a positive, safe environment by building rapport with students. Nothing makes me happier when students walk in and see me and say ' YES! I love when you sub...."

Those days that set you back will inspire you to get back up with a plan so your dreams will come true. ReplyDeleteTo me this means you don't give up when things get tough. There are going to be tough days and we need to show up even more on those day for kids and fellow educators. We use the word persevere a lot in my room, when plan A doesn't work we try plan B. In the classroom or life in general we will always face challenges and we need to be resilient and keep trying despite feeling like quitting.
"One more round" means to me another chance or the round previously was not fully complete as in a saying I like to use "I don't now that yet". What can I do to help leave my school and those around me?" I can continue to build relationships with students and staff. Each day, I make a point of greeting and talking to students, I want all students to feel heard, and valued. I make sure I am visible and present for students and staff. I check in with teachers, whether its stopping by there classroom for a quick "Hi" which gives me an opportunity to see how things are going or if there are any needs that I can help with anything immediately. If there are questions that staff has that I don't have the answer, I make sure I go find the answers and follow-up. Showing up and consistency makes a huge difference where I feel I can do everyday for the students and staff.

ReplyDeleteOne more round simply means to never give up. Make sure you know that there have been countless others who may have had the excuse to give up, but they just seem to bounce back and have no regrets. You might have another path to go in the other round, but there's always another round.
What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?
I like the sign he puts in the classroom "Pride in Performance" because it's true that kids these days get a reward whether they put forth effort or not; thus it's not really rewardable. Pride in performance means simply to put for your best effort and take some pride in that.
To me, "Going one more round", means not quitting, even when things are hard. You need to be able to face challenges. If you fail at something, then you need to be able to come up with a different plan to meet the challenge.
ReplyDeleteI work on building strong relationships with all of my students, so that they know I am their biggest cheerleader in all that they do. I want them to always know how proud they make me, and that I won't give up on them
One more round means to always finish strong. No matter how hard or tired you may feel, finish strong and go one more round. That is something that my parents have instilled in me growing up with whatever I was passionate about either in sports, school, projects, etc. In order to leave the school better than I found it, some things that should be done is figure out what's not working, and try again. Always try again until it feels like you've succeeded, others are on board, and improvements and progress is being shown. Another thing that could be done is to communicate and ask questions. In order to better ourselves as educators and better our school community we have to be communicating and asking questions to figure out what the problem is, what needs to be done, and what steps we can do to get there.

It means continuing to try, grow, and support others even when challenges arise. I can leave my school and those around me better by encouraging others, offering support, and consistently showing up for my colleagues and students. ReplyDelete"One more round" to me means to never give up! At some point in our lives we will all face adversity. How we handle and respond to that adversity is what will make us or break us. I think as educators it is important for us be there for our students when they do face adversity. Supporting them and cheering them on is so important. They need to know that they have someone in their corner wanting them to be successful!

It means doing some self talk to help yourself power through and build confidence to work through obstacles that make you feel like you want to throw in the towel. Each time you power through a tough situation that confidence will build and carry you through the next time you need to convince yourself to keep going and not give up.
ReplyDeleteGoing one more round means to keep persevering. Let's be honest, sometimes teaching leads to burn out and exhaustion. I really like the saying "Going one more round" it's easy to memorize and I plan on using it on those really hard days. I will also use it on the really good days too, because our students deserve our best and we need to always go that extra mile or one more round for them.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that he doesn't speak to the burn out that going one more round often leads to. After many years, teachers do need to find the motivation that it takes to continually step up for those students who need it. That is why it takes a team that can work together and all have the mindset that every student is worth it. They can step up at different times in the year because can get to be a heavy load alone.
DeleteGoing on more round as a SPED behavior teacher means finding the best techniques for each individual student to be able to recognize, identify, and modify their behavior. For some students that is me just holding up a stop sign for them to see as a visual that they need to stop and pause. Other students need time to sit and color or draw. I have another student who needs to take a walk. One more round means taking the time to find what works for each one of my kids!

It’s about pushing past the point where most people would quit. As a teacher and a coach, I see it as helping students and athletes build resilience: showing up again after failure, giving effort when they’re tired, and choosing growth over comfort.
ReplyDeleteIn my history courses, it might look like a student revising an essay instead of settling for a low grade, or continuing to engage in a tough discussion even when it challenges their beliefs. On the football field, it’s finishing the last rep, running the extra sprint, or bouncing back after a bad play. In both settings, it’s about developing mental toughness and a mindset that carries beyond school.
To leave my school and those around me better than I found them, I focus on relationships first. But, I also try to hold them to high standards, because believing in them means expecting more from them. I can also improve by being more intentional by checking in with students who are struggling, and celebrating small wins.

As an elementary music teacher, it means being a constant support and positive influence, even when I'm tired and overwhelmed. I do this by finding new ways to teach, giving moral support to students, or lending a helping hand to staff and school. By sharing my passions and staying persistent, I hope to inspire students to keep moving forward. That's why I sign my contract every year - one more round. As a musician - the saying 'just one more time' is our mantra. We are always striving to do better and to give our best even on the hardest days.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of "One more round" would mean to teach my students that things won't always go our way, but we give it another shot regardless of the outcome. I can live this out, because not every lesson will go my way, or class period even, but I can still show up the next period or the next day to try again or work to do better.

ReplyDeleteTo me, “one more round” means not giving up when something is difficult, whether that is with schoolwork, relationships, or personal goals. It’s about showing up again and again, and doing a little better each time.
To leave my school and the people around me better than I found them, I could make small but consistent and meaningful choices, such as helping students or coworkers who are struggling, being respectful and encouraging, including others, and taking responsibility for my actions. I want to be able to make a difference, even in small ways, each and every day.
One More Round to me means, regardless of the outcome learning from it and choosing to get better each time. Sometimes things aren't going to go in our favor, but choosing to use that as a learning opportunity and get better because of it is what it means to me. I think modeling that behavior for our students and those arounds us is going to help show them, that we don't have to be perfect in all that we do; but showing up and putting our best effort forth is what we can do.

If I want to be an educator who leaves a legacy, I need to step up and take pride in who I am and what I teach. I need to embrace those changes, make those sacrifices, and model the attitude I expect from my students. If I want to create change, I must be that example for both my students and my peers.
ReplyDeleteEven in my 2nd grade classroom, I make sure a positive attitude is what greets students in the morning and what they leave with at the end of the day. I appreciate the emphasis on humility and putting your team first—values that apply at any age. In my classroom, we celebrate both success and failure. If a student is willing to share a thought, answer, or idea, we celebrate that effort. It takes practice, but students are more willing to go ‘one more round’ when they are not afraid to try.
At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel pride in what they have done—students and teachers alike.
Going one more round to me is not giving up on myself, or the others around me. It means showing up every day, even on the hardest days. I need to show up every day -- for myself, for my family, for my coworkers, and for my students. As a teacher, my students need to see that I will never give up on them. We may have differences and we may not see eye to eye on everything, but they need to see that I will keep showing up for them. My students need to see and feel that I am here for them. That means I need to show up, give them a genuine smile, and show them that I truly care about them.
ReplyDeleteI want to show my students and my colleagues that I am there for them. This could mean giving up some of my time to help out. It could mean just giving them an ear so feel heard. It doesn't always have to a big thing to make a difference.
It is so important for the students to see us as the teachers persevere and work through the hard things, not only with our own things, but even more so with them. When they know that we are not giving up and are pushing through the tough with them, they rise to the occasion as well.
DeleteOne more round to me means, when I'm having a bad day because of a troubling student or parent issue, I need to take a moment and reflect on the situation. Don't give up or give in to the problem. Taking a moment to talk with a colleague/friend are essential. I need to think about and assess the situation/problem and make a plan as to how I am going to deal with it. This is how I am going "go one more round."

I agree with your thought of taking a moment and reflecting on the situation. So much of the time we act first without stopping and thinking. I am guilty of this too. I like the idea of stop and the first thing is to think: “What can I do to go one more round?” I also like your comment of not giving into the problem. In the future I really want to work on, not complaining and falling into a negative trap, but instead what can I do to make this situation better for those around me? Demonstrating this to students will be very beneficial, especially if there are situations they can relate to. No, we cannot control everything that happens to us, but what is the light shining through, and how can we push ourselves to go one more round?

One thing I tell my own children often is "attack the day" if something is not going your way, do not avoid it, go through it. One way to make those around you better than you found it/them that I do is coaching. I love sports so I use that as a pathway to connect with not only my kids but kids that I coach or have coached. Sports are awesome to learn adversity, in most instances, you will experience failure and I help lead in expectations or listen to all the things that the kids are feeling. Especially when you are the coach and experiencing a loss with the kids, your connection is that much stronger. I don't know if I am making that big of a difference, but I am trying.

DeleteOne more round means not stopping when I feel like I am finished or when something gets difficult. It means I keep going a little further than I think I can.
ReplyDeleteTo leave my school and the people around me better than I found them I can try harder in my schoolwork even when it is challenging. I can help other students understand things instead of letting them struggle alone. I can be respectful in how I talk and act toward teachers and classmates. I can also include people who are left out and stand up for what is right instead of staying silent. I can take responsibility for my choices and try to make good decisions even when no one is watching.
To me, "one more round" means you have to keep trying. No one is perfect and our kids need to understand that they will stumble, fail, and make mistakes, but it is not the end of their life - we have to keep moving forward and do better the next time. Learn from those stumbles, life is a journey of progress. Students need a little failure in their life at school to help them learn that hard work, dedication and continuing to try your best "one more round" is a life lesson they will carry into adulthood. Learning this lesson at school, when they are surrounded by support, I hope gives them the confidence they need once they are on their own.

ReplyDelete"Leaving it better than you found it" is something I strive for daily by showing kindness and leading by example. By showing up daily with kindness and servant leadership in mind, relationships with students, staff and parents are continually being built. Hopefully, this sparks confidence and a sense of trust throughout the building.
The phrase "one more round" sounds a lot better than our typical, "here we go again" phrase. There are a lot of teachers that don't go one more round, they quit teaching. To me saying let's go one more round means that you not only a teacher, but a person has the fight left in you. Even though you know, there are gonna be tough days ahead. Days that you question whether you're good enough for this job or you can keep doing it. We all have those days as teachers, but we always show up the next day and give it one more round it also looks like trying something over again for example if you teach a lesson and it doesn't work, go back to the drawing board and try it again. Its never giving in, or up.

I also tend to look at everyday as a fresh start and how can I be the best version of myself. How I respond to tough situations and going one more round can have incredible impacts on students lives. I think one of the best things we can do for our students is to show up everyday no matter the circumstance and offer them the best chance to succeed and be the best version of themselves.

There are so many things that happen in our lives and other peoples lives that can affect us negatively. They can make us want to give up and quit. If we have the mindset to just go one more round, it can be life changing. Something that stuck out to me was Hamish’s quote of having “pride in performance.” I think as educators and humans we need to be proud of the work we have done. This shows to students that we gave our best efforts and are proud of ourselves. Students can then do the same thing, and if they fail or make a mistake, it is perfectly okay. You just go one more round, and try again until you have that pride in your performance, and what you worked so hard on. As a colleague and teacher I try everyday to have a positive attitude in my classroom, and building. I like to have a growth mindset that we “get” to come to school and to work, not that we “have to”. Having this mindset has changed my perspectives and I hope influences others around me. It is is privilege to be in a place where you are accepted and loved for who you are. We also as educators get to inspire so many others around us, and be apart of their life’s! Now, who wouldn’t want to be a light to others and be a positive part of their story! Yes there are going to be hard and challenging, but just take a deep breath and go one more round! ReplyDeleteOne More Round means never ever giving up on students and their learning. It is being able to tell every student that no matter how long it takes, or what we have to do, I believe that they can learn and that they can achieve more than they believe. They need to trust, even after testing you, that I won't let them fail. This does not mean to lower standards and expectations so that all students see success, but it is being willing to let students fail so that they can experience perseverance and success in the climbing their way back up. I try to always take the opportunity to go one more round with the hardest to reach students. It takes many more rounds often, but the pay off is big for the student. I can send them to the next grade with more confidence, grit, and positive experiences behind them. The fear of failure can be replaced with the feeling of accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI especially appreciate that you point out that one more round doesn't mean standards and expectations are lowered. Instead it means facing the situation with perseverance. I have seen this in my own children, where if they are keep trying and finally accomplish something on their own, they begin beaming and in turn end up trying something more difficult. The confidence and grit that students gain when they push through is so exciting to watch.

I have asked students whose lives are tough but still do great what is that makes them keep going. Their responses were, "I don't want to end up like parents and live their life, I want better." Another student said that, "I know I deserve better but the only way that is going to happen is if I make it happen." These students are resilient. The are emotionally intelligent students. I've asked myself over and over again, "What makes them think like that?" I see students with no hope in their eyes, no goals are set in their minds and I see it as my duty to give them hope and motivation. I want to see every child have an opportunity to learn and to believe in themselves.
ReplyDeleteThat is why I believe that education has to be meaningful and purposeful, students need to know they "why" when they ask "Why do I have to go to school or why do I need good grades? They need to feel and experience it and that doesn't always happen in a classroom. Education has to be meaningful.
One more round means giving it my all every day, and not giving up on students. Something I say to students often is, "If I'm not giving up on you, then you can't either." Each day I go into school with the mindset that I will do my best to teach my students well. Some days I leave school feeling like a rockstar teacher, but other days I leave feeling frustrated that things did not go quite as I hoped. Either way, I go home knowing that I am not throwing in the towel, and that every day is a new day. I give myself that grace, but I also extend it to my students, treating them with respect and letting each day be new for them as well.
ReplyDeleteSomething that I can do for my students to leave them better than I found them is to treat them as valuable and call them by name. Especially since I became a mom, I have realized more and more that my students are someone else's child, and I want to care for my students the same way that I hope my own kids are being cared for in their own classrooms. This shift in role and attitude does leave my students better than I found them, as the result is students that know they are cared for and that are also held accountable to standards.
I agree with you about treating my students as I hope my own children were treated by their teachers. When you are a teacher and a mom, you view things differently. I find myself thinking about how I would feel if my own child was struggling and how I would want the teacher to respond. Putting value onto each child helps me to respond with grace and kindness, along with a gentle push to keep them from giving up. All students deserve to be treated with respect.
DeleteOne More Round means giving my best each day. I am a firm believer that having a positive attitude can, and will, change your day. When we lead a class with positivity our students will begin to approach their day in the same way. I never hesitate to let my students know that it's not always easy and things will be hard. We don't always want to do what is expected of us. However, entering those tasks with a "one more round" mentality will help us succeed. I also think it is so important for students to experience setbacks and know that that is all part of life. Picking ourselves up and trying again is such a valuable lesson. We celebrate attempts in our room every day!!
ReplyDeleteOne More Round for me is every day starts fresh and new. A clean slate or fresh start to be ready, give it my all, and try again. I can become overwhelmed by the process, behaviors, and life in general. I feel this way most often in the later parts of the day. I consistently remind myself to work hard, strive to meet the days goals, and then re-start for the next day
ReplyDeleteIf I need a new start each day then my co-workers and students deserve the same. I try to model "one more round" and a fresh start to my students reflecting that a bad choice can be turned around with the fresh start of a new day. Holding a grudge or holding over a behavior does not allow us to "get back up", grow (learn from our mistakes), or work to our full potential which then traps us and our students in a negative place.
I love your taking on "one more round". This is something I strive so hard to do but somedays it's tough! As a mom with 3 young kids, some mornings are more chaotic than others and sometimes the stress from the morning trickles into my classroom. This is a great way to look at going "one more round" and it's something I can definitely apply to my professional and personal life!
DeleteTo me, going “one more round” means going out of my comfort zone. Many times as educators, we get into a routine that works and we don’t change it up or try something new. This is something I’m working to improve on. Recreating lessons and making adjustments isn’t always easy and it creates more work for myself, but I do it for my students so they can have better learning opportunities and outcomes.
ReplyDeleteIn my school, I have worked to build strong relationships with my students that last throughout the years. I love when I get the opportunity to visit with my students that I taught 9 years ago. Whether it’s complimenting them on their basketball game from the other night or sharing a laugh with them about something they did or said back in pre-k, I treasure the relationship I have with them. My hope is that by having trusted adults and teachers who truly care about them in our school, they will see the value that we also see in them.
I like your definition of "one more round". It is uncomfortable to step out of our comfort zones. I admire your willingness to take risks (adapt lessons/try new approaches). It shows that you are still an invested teacher - attempting to provide students great learning experiences. It is pretty cool to connect with past students - hearing about their successes. ReplyDeleteTo me, "one more round" means doing my best work all the time even when it is difficult. It means being there for kids even on the hard days when work is overwhelming and stressful. It means not giving up when things do not go as planned, instead pushing forward. It means doing whatever it takes for students and others around me.
I do many things to leave my school and those around me better than I found it/them. One ways is by building relationships with students and those that I work with. Due to these relationships, I am better able to support and encourage others when they are facing challenges or need guidance - this is necessary in a school counselor role. Specifically with students I am able to guide and support them academically and as they make decisions/plans post high school. With staff, I am able to support their work with students. Ultimately, I hope that my relationships make an impact on all around me. By making students and others feel supported, I am leaving my school and those around me better than I found them/it.
