The Great Ones Go One More Round:  What does “one more round” mean to you?  What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

  1. I think "going one more round" means to never give up, keep pushing on, and continue putting in the extra effort. It is important as teachers that we continue to do this not only for ourselves, but for our students as well. It is important that we instill these and model them so we can continue to show our colleagues, students, on ourselves that we can do hard things, we can perservere, and that things will make us better.

  2. "One more round" means that you don't quit, you don't say it is 3:30 I am out of here. I try to listen to teachers. I ask them how their day went. I try to plan get-togethers. I want to in the new year observe even more in the classrooms and be around school more outside of class to help out and be there for when a teacher needs to talk. I also want to make my room / myself more available for students to talk. I know I have one whose mom has terminal cancer and I want to be there for him if he needs to talk. Finally, I hope I can continue to be calm when dealing with students and that rubs off on the teachers so they do not hold grudges and can see you can lovingly discipline a student. I would like to lighten my load so I can have more time for teachers, but if that doesn't happen I will continue to keep going another round.

  3. Going one more round is a sort of stick-to-itiveness. Keep fighting with grit, persistence, attitude and no fear. Even when you feel like giving up, continue to be a leader to find solutions that others will see and look up to. I think I work and try hard each day to show students and other staff members that I do have an attitude and the persistence to solve issues that arise. Whether or not the solutions work is beside the point…..point is, I didn’t give up on myself or the person(s) in which the problem was hindering. I believe I show I am a role model by helping wherever and whenever I can. Volunteering my time for the betterment of our school and students and being involved shows im willing to go one more round.

  4. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

Going "one more round" to me is understanding that I have more in me when the tank feels empty. Believing that I am capable of getting back in the fight after a road block. Also knowing that the growth and learning is done in that "one more round" moment.

I believe that I can leave my school and those around me in a better place through servant leadership and relationships built on respect and humility. Sometimes it is hard to see the difference I am making, but If I commit to those things, I do believe I am doing my community a service and leaving it in a better place. We can always use more humility, respect and service in our circles and so I know if I can bring that to the table I will be leaving things better than I found them.

  5. As others in the blog have stated, I agree that going "one more round" means to continue working on your goals despite the obstacles that stand in your way. It means if your goal is not being achieved, you need to try a different approach. Being tired, being busy, being stressed is something we all feel at times. That is no excuse for not doing what needs to be done.
Giving of myself is one way I feel I make a difference in peoples' lives. I do volunteer work three days a week and no matter how tired I am, how busy I am, the feelings I have after visiting leave me knowing I left the people we encountered in a better place, and to me that is success.

  6. To me, "going one more round" means getting back up after I fail and trying again. Whether this is in my personal life or in my classroom with my students, I need to keep challenging myself and not give up until I've reached my goal. I work hard for my students and try to always be there for them, helping them learn even when it's hard or uncomfortable. They need to persevere through challenging assignments and learn from their mistakes. I want them to know I love them, even when they are being difficult, and I want the best for them. Sometimes things get frustrating and it's easy to give up. My hope is that they go out into the world with tools to help them persevere through struggles and are willing to "go one more round" to get past them. I also needed this reminder to stick with something and keep working until I reach my own personal goals.

  7. To me, "going one more round" means that I get back up after I have failed. It means never giving up when there are obstacles in your life that may be difficult or have you feeling defeated. Finding the strength within myself to keep moving forward and using those obstacles as stepping stones to learn from and make myself better, as a person or an educator). To persevere during times I feel like I can't go anymore. While in the classroom I always told my students "never give up". I challenged my students to think outside of the box when they encountered obstacles in their lives, whether it be school work, relationships, or just life in general. I would pose their problem to them in question form and help them come up with different ways to solve it. I hope that I gave my students some confidence in themselves that they CAN persevere if they never give up!

  8. Going "one more round" for me means continuing to help serve each and every family I am fortunate enough to work with. To help each of those families be the best advocates for their children. To guide and coach them to the best of my ability and to always give every effort I have to provide needed resources. It also means to let myself continue to be humbled by the relationships I continue to form and to learn from every experience.

  9. I believe "one more round" means no matter how tough things get, you continue on. To have perseverance and determination to make things better for our students. I have been going one more round for 29 years, often standing up for what is right and just rather than going along with the norm.

  10. "One more round" means to try again. Try again with students, with parents, with the community, with other staff, and with content/tasks. For example, my students all receive behavioral support as part of their IEPs. I focus on "every day is a new day" and we don't focus on yesterday. We may learn from yesterday, but we don't dwell or focus on it. "Every day is a new day" is the same as "one more round" to me. We continue to learn and make progress.

  11. One more round means to keep pushing even when things are hard and seem overwhelming. At STARBASE, we teach CAD with a program from the Para Technology Corporation. Learning engineering on the computer was very difficult for me. I didn't grow up with computers, so it was a struggle for me to learn the program. I didn't give up even though I struggled mightily. I would use the program at home and practice and practice until I became comfortable enough to teach it. I would just feel good about my skills and then PTC would update the program and I would have to learn new tools and techniques. It was a constant struggle, but I never gave up. A couple of years ago, PTC changed the program to Onshape and completely overhauled everything. SD STARBASE was chosen to pioneer Onshape, so it meant another whole new learning curve. I never gave up, again I practiced and practiced on my own until I became confident that I could teach it. I am very empathetic with the students who struggle with catching on, and I tell them of my "one more round" experiences.

  12. To me, "going one more round" means finding the strength to keep going, even when everything seems to be working against you. It’s about showing up, even on the days when you feel drained or discouraged. It’s easy to feel defeated when things aren’t going as planned—when students aren’t responding, when obstacles seem endless, or when you’re simply feeling overwhelmed. But going one more round is about digging deeper during those moments. It’s choosing not to let frustration or setbacks define the day. It means finding resilience in the face of adversity, pushing past the desire to quit, and staying committed to the bigger picture. It’s about perseverance—knowing that even when things are tough, the effort you put in will make a difference, and every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to the goal. I will do this by going beyond the basics and striving to improve, whether that’s through building stronger relationships with students, supporting your colleagues, or creating an environment that fosters growth for everyone.

  13. "Going one more round" means to keep persevering. I have to say I had the hardest class of my teaching career 2 years ago. I wanted to give up. I didn't feel supported. I started thinking about what other job I could get. I was losing my passion for being in the classroom. Last year was a little better, but my drive still wasn't back. I needed to do something different. Nothing changes if nothing changes. Some of my colleagues were talking about these book studies and how the books are good reads and you can get college credit on top of it. I started thinking about my need to make goals for myself. I wanted to feel proud of myself again. I got my masters 20 years ago and haven't really done anything since. I wanted to feel good about myself as a teacher again. I decided to start working on my masters plus 15. I had no idea reading these books would reignite my passion for teaching. I am so glad I decided to go "one more round" and not give up. The classroom is where I truly feel I belong.

  14. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

One more round is a wonderful representation of education. Students face so many difficulties at the middle school level. They are facing difficult living situations, physical and emotional change, working on their social game, and trying to keep academics a priority. It's impossible to keep all those plates spinning at one time. "One More Round" tells students that we're going to give it another go. We don't have to crush every area of improvement, but we'll get there. I try to let students know that the goal is improvement. Learning is a process and they're not going to accomplish it every moment of every day. And even when they fail, they're still learning. It's about continuing to try. It's about using resources and problem solving. I love the idea of "one more round."

When I remain humble and lead by example I am modeling for the families/students I work with how to not give up. This means that when things get tough, I have a mindset that there is a solution. The people involved in the situation are not my enemy, we have a common problem and it will take us working together to figure it out. It would be easy in some of these circumstances at school to give up, but that is not the answer. Today may not have been the day I wanted it to be, but I can get myself back up, own my choices and go forward for "one more round."

  16. When thinking about going one more round, I immediately make the connection from teaching to boxing. We all have days when we get knocked down, when the opponent - whether its the admin, students, parents, system, etc - keep landing punches that we weren't prepared to block. Going one more round means getting back up after that and giving all you've got. We are allowed to have a bad day, but each day is a fresh start. My grandma used to say you can have a five minute pity party and then you need to move on. I think we can leave a positive impact on our schools and students by showing our human. So many people think teachers need to live to a higher standard in and out of school. But making that human connection with students is part of what builds a positive relationship with them. They can relate to you more when you "let your human show."

  17. "One more round" to me means you don't quit and you don't accept defeat. When things don't have the outcome you had hoped for or you get "knocked down" by some unexpected circumstance, you get back up and don't stay down. Rather than looking at it as a failure, look at it as an opportunity for growth, learning, and getting better and stronger. As Hamish speaks to in the reading, you can't control everything that happens to you and around you, but you can control your attitude and how you respond to it.
To leave my work place and people around me better than I found them, I first need to listen. I must acknowledge others thoughts and ideas, put myself in their shoes, and treat them with respect and understanding. It is also so important to admit when we make mistakes and allow others to make mistakes and work through them to move on in a positive manner. It's all about relationship for me.
I make every effort to live with passion and purpose, not getting too caught up in the past or too worried about the future, but rather enjoying each and every day. Every day counts!

  18. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

To me "one more round"means to just keep going. Another quote comes to mind as I ponder this: "Rest if you must, but don't you quit." Another with the same connotation: "Don't throw in the towel, use it to wipe the sweat off and keep on going." I think this means just keep showing up and doing everything you can to help the students. If this requires staying after to school to help it requires staying after school. I put in a lot of 12 hour days if I sub and have games/practices after school to cover for my athletic training job I just remind myself to keep going.

  19. Going one more round to me means putting in that extra effort after a long day. When all you want to do is go home and just show a movie the next day, you stick it out and plan another lab, something fun and interactive for the kids. It means not getting frustrated when you have machines break or malfunction you get your book out and solve the problem to fix it.
One thing I did to make the school and people better was when before I left my teaching job I made sure to make copies of all my files/labs/presentations for not only the next teacher coming in, but any teacher who wanted it . The reasoning for this is if it helps one teacher with even 1 idea they didn't have before then its worth the time to share it all.

  20. To me, "one more round" symbolizes pushing yourself beyond your limits when things get tough. It’s about perseverance and not giving up when you've already reached the point where most people would stop. To rise above challenges, keep fighting, learning, and growing, no matter what obstacles might be in your way. Leaving a positive impact can be meaningful because young children are in the stages of their social, emotional, and cognitive development. I can make a difference by focusing on having a nurturing, inclusive, and engaging environment that encourages creativity, curiosity, and kindness. I really focus on being kind and helping children understand how their actions affect others. Creating an environment where children feel safe and encouraged to explore is also very important to me. I want to leave knowing that I shaped their future interactions and behaviors in a positive way.

  21. "One More Round" means to keep trying even when things get tough. This is something I say to my kids and students often. I just watched a video this morning that said "push yourself until you fail, and then do it again." Its easy to do what is, well easy, to stick to the status quo but if you are willing to 'go one more round', that is where the success happens!

  22. One more round means perseverance. Go the distance. Do whatever it takes. Keep trying until you succeed. We learn from our mistakes, from our failures. To leave my school and those around me better than I found them I always have a positive attitude. Relationships are important to make the school work.

  23. I feel one more round is so very important in education at this time. Students have a lot of things going on in their lives and need more than 1 chance to pass a math test or quiz. Some of my students miss a lot of school and therefore miss some important pieces of the math puzzle. So my job as an educator is to fill those holes & take the test again! I found this concept pertinent to me when I was obtaining my masters degree in MS Math. My professor let us retake any tests or quizzes as we went along without any questions asked. I really appreciated the second chance & was so relieved when my scores were higher. I really wanted to do the sa,e thing for my students. Some teachers thought it was cheating but I looked at it as 1 more round to make things better. I want my students to feel comfortable in Math and their skills. So allowing them to get a better grade is my way of making my school a better place because the students keep trying & succeed eventually and feel better about themselves.

  24. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

Going one more round means to continue on in the face of failure and defeat. As a teacher, this means giving that student another instance of patience when you feel at the end of your rope. It also means trying one more explanation in one-on-one time with them to help them "get" it. It's about digging down deep because you value your community, school, and those around you.

  25. To me, "one more round" means acknowledging the times throughout the day when things aren't going as planned, facing those defeats, picking oneself up, and making a positive change. "One more round" can be the motivation to change an attitude towards something or a mindset.
I think it is important to check in and observe those around us. Sometimes as educators we get stuck in the routines and schedules of our day, that we forget to slow down and have a real conversation (not school related) to check in with our colleagues and students. Having those personal connections can sometimes be the difference in someone's day.

  26. One more round means to me that the fight isn’t over I have another chance to show whomever that I can do what I set out to do. One More Round is also defined by your character. Believe in yourself. Take the risk, not everyone gets a trophy. BE ADVERSE pride and performance. The answer is always yes go the other round. In my school I try to help go out of my to help a student or staff member with anything they need when I have a free minute. Also if there is trash or a mess that needs cleaned up I find myself helping out with that.

  27. For me, "one more round" means to keep on teaching. If I'm honest, part of the reason I chose these book studies was for inspiration and motivation. I've taught long enough now that I tend to fall into the pattern of going with the motions. Difficult behavior issues and an increase in administrative workload has worn me down over the years. I'm looking to get my spark back.
Sometimes, "one more round" is just showing up in the classroom each day with the best attitude I can have. I need to focus on the good, and especially the good that I can bring. I need to find lesson activities that I'm passionate about, and bring those to the forefront of my curriculum.
I want to be remembered as a teacher who not only taught content in a fun, effective way but mostly as someone who role modeled strong character and held students accountable to high standards. I want to see more kindness, honesty, and perseverance in schools.

  28. "One more round" to me means to show grit and perseverance to push through the hard times. Teaching is an amazing career, but it is also extremely challenging! Not every day is going to feel successful. Some days are going to feel like the students and I moved backward instead of forward. However, if you put the past behind you and prepare yourself to go another round, you can achieve amazing things with your kids!

For me, I try to start each day fresh with my middle school students. We all have rough days. Each day is a chance to start anew and move forward to make awesome strides together! I think it is important I model this for my students.

  29. I was just having a conversation this week related to this topic. How many teachers are just coasting? How many are are going one more round and putting in extra work and not getting any recognition for going above and beyond? I know recognition is not what they expect but we do need to tell these teachers we see the hard work they are putting in and the love they have for their job and their students. I have observed a particular middle student a couple times in the last week and I feel like no one has taken the time to build a relationship with her. She's difficult and it's hard for me to understand how she has made it this far in school with the particular academic challenges she has without thinking she has been pushed aside. I can see from a teacher's standpoint how draining she could be and how I'd want to just to get through the year because she doesn't want to cooperate. However, from observing, I could see a hurting girl with a tough shell needing a relationship. You may need to sacrifice your lunchtime alone and make some sort of connection with a student like this because she needs to feel safe and know she can let her guard down in your classroom before she can even think about learning and taking a risk.

  30. The concept of going one more round is the back bone of the profession of teaching. It is showing up each day and trying to be the best teacher, role model, advocate, and leader that we can be. One more round is doubling down when it feels easier to give up. I watch educators constantly pivot and recreate to meet the needs of students who might not fall under the umbrella of tier one instruction. Then this continues to happen each day, quarter, and school year.

I think that continuing to look for creative solutions and working as a team within the building is a way to improve and impact the school. Constantly looking for ways to create a place where students are excited to be and can thrive in their learning. I believe this is done by connecting with students and colleagues to create an atmosphere of education and inclusion.

  31. To me, “going one more round” means sticking with it and pushing through, especially when things get tough. As educators, we have to remember that the time we have with our students is short and valuable. Even on the days when we are feeling off, it is still our job to show up for them with strong lessons and meaningful relationships. We chose this profession, and part of that choice is committing to give it our best every single day.

I really try to bring a positive attitude into my building. I want to leave both students and coworkers better than I found them. I make it a point to be visible and check in with as many fellow staff members as I can throughout the day, sometimes just to share a laugh or talk about something besides students. I think taking a break from all the school stuff now and then helps keep spirits up. I do the same thing with students. I try to connect with them on a personal level, not just about school or behavior. I think it is important they know that school is about more than tests and grades, it is also about relationships and life.

  32. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

To me "One more round" means to go the extra mile. I feel that there are too many educators that just show up for contracted hours and don't put in much effort outside of that. "One more round" is being willing to work with students to help them succeed and learn to persevere. That might be working with students during your lunch break or after school. It might mean working hard to communicate with parents about their students. It is also things that show your willingness to go the extra mile and that students are important such as showing up to their extra curricular activities. It is also not giving up on difficult students. Students know when you care about them and put in the extra work.

  33. What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

I think one more round means to pick yourself up even on the hard days and keep plugging away making a difference in the lives of those around you. I only work with eleven students throughout the day. There are around 750 students in our building and many of them I will never learn their name. That being said, I make a point to smile and say hi to every student I meet in the hallway. Those that I see more regularly, I make a point to learn their name and then start greeting them by name when I see them. I want them to feel as if someone is happy to see them.

  34. Going one more round to me means to keep pushing to make all aspects of school better. Whether that means holding students to acceptable behaviors, or giving ideas to admin to help the school become a better place. Going out of my comfort zone and doing what I think is right is going one more round.

  35. Going one more round means persevering when things are difficult and never giving up. As instructors I believe that it is our job to let students see that failure is an opportunity for growth. We would not have all the comforts and luxuries that we have without the brave people who were willing to fail, make changes, and try again.

I can make the school better than I left it by letting my students know that I care about them as people. Relationship building is key to student success. Some students have difficult home lives that add challenges to daily life. These children crave positive attention so they understand that they are valued and can make a significant contribution to the world. They just need someone to love them unconditionally!

Ultimately, “one more round” is about resilience — staying in the fight when it matters most and lifting others while you're at it. That’s how I strive to make a lasting impact. I continue to build relationships, model lifelong learning, create meaningful learning opportunities to promote leadership and empowerment to all students.

  37. Going one more round means that you keep going and keep trying, not quitting and giving up.
By building relationships and trust with your students and staff, you’ll help in getting them to believe in themselves and each other. When you show someone that you believe in them, that gives them the confidence to carry on. Teaching self confidence and the ability to see failure as a learning experience and a positive thing can turn around a school. Confidence and trying hard can be contagious, especially if it’s modeled throughout the school and becomes part of the school identity.

  38. To me going one more round is to keep persevering. When you are tired and feel like giving up, keep trying. Sometimes that is hard to do especially towards the end of the school year or when you have tried everything you can think of to help a student and nothing seems to be working. I've had this happen this school year actually. I ended up asking my colleagues for help to see if they had any ideas that I hadn't thought of. They did have some ideas and we are currently still working with this child to make his learning experiences successful!

  39. Going one more round to me means to persevere through some of the hard challenges that a person goes through. Never quit even when times get tough and you don't want to do it! Sometimes if you go one more round or persevere, the result is rewarding.

I would like to think that my character and kindness to others goes a long way in school. This can be towards students and co-workers. Showing kindness and passion can really inspire others to be positive and do other acts of kindness. It can go as far as making someone' s day just a little bit better!

To me, one more round is about is to keep going, keep giving, keep believing. I spent 14 years as an education consultant and went back to the classroom. I am 65 and switching schools AND subjects. I am not ready to retire or stop learning. I have more in my tank . I like to think I model positivity, caring, and kindness to the people I come in contact with. Even a smile might brighten someone's day.

  41. "One more round" to me means that we keep trying, even if we have to take a moment to catch our breath, we get up and we go again. It means that we keep trying and we look at things a different way if we need to in order to succeed.

To leave my school and those around me better than I found them, I will continue to build relationships/connections with them, to learn what interests them, and to hopefully show them that being kind and caring goes much further in life than anything. To celebrate who their authentic selves and help them find what brings them joy and lights a fire under them.

  42. To go "one more round" means that when things get hard, we try harder. I do think many kids that I work with (including my own at home) are not used to failing, or expect an adult to make things easier for them when things get hard. I think that kids should be supported, but to help them harness their skills and get better we need to let them fail sometimes, and then show them how to start over and learn from their mistakes - I think that is where real learning and growth happens.

  43. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

To me, "one more round" means giving additional effort and not giving up. When something doesn't work out as you had hoped, you try again. If it still doesn't work out after trying and giving it your all , move on to trying something else.

One thing I try to teach in my classroom is that it is ok to struggle. Struggle is where we learn. When I send students to work independently, I always ask them to try first. If you ask for help without trying, you haven't even tried to struggle. I ask them to try and let them know I will be back in a few minutes to check on them. I hope this leaves them better than I found them and I hope it teaches them they are not alone and I am here to help.

  44. The Great Ones Go One More Round: What does “one more round” mean to you? What do you do (or could you do) to leave your school and those around you better than you found it/them?

It means not giving up or trying to find another way to be successful. This is something I try to work with kids on and sometimes it's a tough concept to grasp. Things don't always go how we think they should and sometimes we don't win the game we're playing. It doesn't mean that you are bad at whatever you are doing, we make mistakes so we are able to learn from them. No, mistakes aren't fun, but if we are able to take something from that lesson to continue to try our best, we continue to work and strive towards what we want to accomplish.

  45. One more round to me means you preserver through the tough times. Tough times don't last, you can make it one more round and come out better in the end. It's almost like what is one more thing I can do today that I didn't do yesterday to make my life, my students lives, or my colleges lives better for the future. Don't get me wrong, taking care of yourself is important, but if you take care of others, the favor will be returned and help you out as well. We can get caught up in the negative, so my teaching partner and I check in at the end of the day and state a positive that happened to remind us to focus on the positive and to keep us coming back.

  46. Going one more round means not giving up just because something is hard or that you do not succeed the first time. I share my personal struggles with my students and how I have had to overcome so much to reach the goals I have and I tell them that while in my class, I will be right there through every struggle with them. We will work hard together to understand the material and find the relevance in our lives.
I think one way I can leave my classroom and school better is simply caring for those I work with and for my students. I try very hard to build relationships with everyone of my students. This can be hard for those students that don't think they need someone but just acknowledging them and say hi opens the doors for them to share more on other days.
Within the school, I think the biggest impact we can make is to just stay positive and continue to remember why we went into teaching. To not get boggled down with the negative and endless list of extra things we are asked to do but to just find the joys in our days.

  47. I would like to think and "one more round" means to keep working on a problem until a solution is found. I can ask for help if I need to find the solution. I can research the problem more if needed also. I think this will help me find solutions to problems.
I find myself comparing this book to the one I just read, "Fewer things better." Watson talks about learning to say no to things. It is a completely different approach.
I will need to start considering the differences and see where the two books come together.

  48. One more round means always to get back up over and over again after being knocked down. It means no matter what, you never give up. It means using a different route but continuing towards your end goal. It means not taking no for an answer but reinventing yourself when you are told no.

  49. One more round implies a growth mindset/the power of yet. It means continuous improvement. We are getting better every day. We are able to overcome challenges, accept feedback, and learn new skills. It allows us to think critically and reflect on how we can improve. The power of yet is a part of Memorial Middle School’s core value of excellence. It permits students to make mistakes. Mistakes are a part of the learning process. In turn, it creates a safe learning environment.

  50. One more round means giving my all to provide opportunities and make sure all students succeed. It means putting in effort outside of the school day to help students be successful.
It also means staff work as a team to provide what's best for our students.

  51. Going “one more round” to me means to keep pushing myself to be better, because there are students depending on me to help them. Whether that be with school stuff or someone they can talk to. “One more round” means leaving the yesterday’s poor interactions/situations in the past and starting each day with a fresh new attitude. One way that I feel I could help those around me be better is by being someone they can come talk to, sort of the sounding board. There are things that happen in the day where I/we just need to talk through the events and who better understands what we are going through than someone who is going through the same stuff. Hopefully that will make my team better.

  52. To me, "one more round" means resiliency and bouncing back as many times as it takes. It means seeing the highest potential in everyone. It means seeking professional development to stay on the cutting edge of best practices. It means when students and I are not on the same page figuratively, I keep trying to look for new ways to connect with them. It means forgive, forget and keep forging forward. I can make a plan for how I will show up with at least one out of the box lesson or hook each week to be unpredictable and to keep them engaged. I will notice the emotional state of those around me and offer encouragement and connection when it is appropriate. I will show them that I am invested in them by what I do and the joy they see on my face that they are in my class.

  53. Going one more round is how you respond to adversity. It is that fight within you to get up and keep pushing especially when things are difficult. In my position, I spend a great deal of my day working with students who are struggling with reading. I thought of them as I was reading these chapters. It is a struggle for them to keep trying. They are often from homes where their parents do not read or write English. There is a lot on the line for them. I hope I can be an example of going one more round for them and that I can instill that concept in them. It is a powerful life lesson no matter what path you take.

  54. Going on more round means taking those extra steps or the time to make that lesson great. After teaching the same activities over and over again, go one more round and change it up. Try something new and if you fail, that's okay. We are all going to fail at some point, but that means we are learning. It shows our students that we are humans too, and we can show them that we can adjust. We don't let failures stop us. We just keep going. It might not be easy and by showing our students that not everything comes easy, that's okay. The work/effort/fight makes the rewards that much sweeter.

  55. To me, “one more round,” means not giving up even when situations are tough or I am having a hard time connecting with a student. Something that I could do to leave my school and those around me better than I found it or them, is to work with my team of teachers to brainstorm solutions or ask for help or guidance. Something that I have done when I am having a hard time connecting with a student is the 2 x 10 strategy where I visit with him or her for about 2 minutes every day for 10 days to work on building a relationship. I have had success with this strategy with even the most challenging students. It is important that my students and co-workers know I won’t give up and am willing to go “one more round”, even when things get tough.

  56. "One more round" means never giving up on any student and doing those lessons that seems like more work but you know they are what the students need. We've all had that one student that seems to not want anything to do with us, but we never give up and we keep going "one more round" trying to build that relationship, and one day it works. It also means doing lessons that you know could go off the rails, but you refuse to let that guild your decision and you do it anyway because it's best for the students. One more round is showing up everyday with a positive attitude even when you're exhausted need a break. One more day should be the mantra for every teacher because we all go "one more round" every day in our profession. Something I do to make my school better is to build relationships with every student that walks into my room. I pride myself on building relationships with that one student that nobody wants to see on their roster. Once I crack their hard exterior they usually become my favorite student. It usually takes multiple "one more round" but it's worth it!!

  57. Going one more round means to not give up. It makes me think of the old adage, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Too many times people give up when life gets hard. Maybe we expect the "best" students and to always love our job every day. Even the "best" students have tough days that bleed into the classroom, and this makes it rough for everyone. Sometimes we need to chalk it up to "this too shall pass" and keep working hard on developing the best lessons, relationships, and experiences for our students and co-workers. To go one more round means to be real and to not hide who we really are. If we are our authentic selves, students and colleagues will recognize and be attracted to our aura. We do this by getting to know our students and those we work with and developing these interactions into meaningful relationships. We do this in our work environment by bringing solutions to the table and not feeding into the negativity. If you don't like something, how can we make it better?

Going one more round means to me that you don't give up when something gets tough or it didn't go how you planned it the first time. Not only going one more round in your classroom, but also in your life. Everyday trying to be better than the day before. I try to always greet people with a smile, even just in passing because you never know who might be having a hard day. I want to never give up on one of my students, because like in the book, school could be their safe place. I've worked with not so friendly staff before and it is not a pleasant workplace. It's awkward and uncomfortable. Being in a profession where you work closely with a lot of people I think it's important to treat them kindly and as a professional. It's awful feeling like less of a person because of how someone else acts towards you. I make sure I never make someone feel that way. Going one more round means a lot of things to me.

  59. Going one more round means laying out a new goal and devising steps to accomplish that goal. Maybe you need smaller steps so you don't lose sight of the goal and give up. Maybe you need to ask help from certain people to help get you closer to that goal. Making an action plan and sticking to it (revising, updating as needed) is going one more round. Never give up, never give in!

  60. To go "One More Round" means to never give up, to keep going forward. I think setting goals and keep trying to achieve them by going one more round is important. Life can get very hard. The important thing is to never give up. Don't give up on your students, don't give up on other colleagues. Be there and show up!
